FRED: Feedback/Review Electronic Database (software)

CHALLENGE
The high volume of work from our top clients made it difficult to track the design reviews by email. One of the problems was that within the client's organization, a manager from one department was not aware of the other managers' comments. We also needed the solution to work for more than one client.
APPROACH
To help manage the complexity of interactions for both our team and the client our approach was to add cohesiveness and transparency for the various stakeholders. We focused on features that allowed searching, viewing and commenting on a given review.
SOLUTIONWe created a custom, online tool: a Feedback and Review Electronic Database – or more fondly referred to as FRED. Some of FRED’s features included: search and sort by date, title or author; view all comments including previous iterations; make and submit comments; upload media; and more.
FRED - Feedback Review Electronic Database
UX DESIGNER/PRODUCER. Agency: Toolhouse Design, Bellingham, WA
I Led the UX design and development of a custom online feedback and review system to manage the high volume and complexity of interactions around the review with our main clients: Intuit and Symantic
FRED Client Survey
My first step in the FRED design was to create a survey that was sent to clients using the software. The questions were targeted to understand their impressions with the existing feedback and review process -- their pain points, what worked, what didn't, and what might make the process easier for them. This information was used to create the user scenarios and IA elements.
Fred. User Scenarios
I created detailed User Scenarios for each step in the process. These helped oriented the teams (design, dev, executive and client) to begin to think about the structure and features required in the software and to explore how we can make it work.
Fred. User Flow/Scenarios
I created a flowchart to map the user scenarios to the user process.
FRED IA - Taxonomy
I created these three IA pieces as a step before wireframes: a Taxonomy, a Controlled Vocabulary (Glossary) and a Content Hierarchy for the feedback section.
FRED Preliminary Wireframes
I created a preliminary set of wireframes to communicate to the design and dev team the basic idea for the pages. Each wireframe included a table beneath that listed the feature, location, function, and copy (not shown here).
Fred Wireframe
I compiled detailed wireframes, using screen caps from the click-through prototype, that called-out features for every page. The wireframes were used in the master UI doc.
Fred Prototype
The dev team created a cilck-through prototype for the client and team to test FRED (Feedback/Review Electronic DB). The screen caps were from the click-through prototype. The wireframes were part of the master UI doc.
